Why choose to pursue Biophotonics research at UC Irvine? UC Irvine is a well-established global leader in Biophotonics. Initially seeded by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Resource grant in 1979, and established by the Beckman Foundation in 1982, the Beckman Laser Institute at UC Irvine has generated advances in the field of Biophotonics for 30 years. Starting from this nucleus, UCI invested in significant research expertise and infrastructure in Biophotonics across its Schools of Biological Sciences, Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Medicine. Not merely focused on instrumentation, current research integrates technology development with (a) applications to discover and examine a range of biological and physiological across spatial and temporal scales; (b) translation for patient diagnosis and treatment; and (c) licensing and transfer to industry. This breadth of activity has led to five "Center of Excellence" grants from the NIH and the Department of Defense (DoD) including two NIH P41 Biomedical Technology Resource Centers: the Laser Microbeam and Medical Program, the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics and an NIH P50 Center for Complex Biological Systems.
